The Millennials of Maven Wave

The Millennials of Maven Wave

Today, Millennials represent the largest segment within the working class. With 1/3 of the workforce consisting of Millennials, society has attached numerous titles to this generation ranging from “digital natives” to “lazy and entitled.” As discussed in our previous installments, it’s vital for the enterprise to adapt to a Millennial-friendly culture to stay ahead of the competition. Hear what some of our employees at Maven Wave have to say about being a Millennial in the workplace.

What value do Millennials bring to the workplace?

“Millennials bring confidence, energy, and the ability to adapt to change. With the digital era comes the continuous change in the way we communicate and express our opinions. By nature, Millennials have been at the front of this change. It’s often discussed that technology influences society; however, society has just as strong of an influence on the innovations of technology and a lot of that influence comes from the voice of the Millennials. The ability to express ourselves to a larger audience has been at our fingertips for longer than any other generation. This has given us confidence and energy to disrupt the status quo.”  Lars Feste, Analyst on the Google Cloud Analytics Team

What’s the biggest myth about Millennials?

“The biggest myth about Millennials is that we are entitled and lazy. The reality is that we want to change the world and we want to do it today. That’s a fire that comes from within and that is certainly not something you can teach. If you look at the world today, it’s Millennials who are primarily responsible for the rapid growth of the tech start-up world. We want to make an immediate impact in the world and we want to relish in the fruits of our labor. I think we are mislabeled with having an “attitude of entitlement.” I don’t think we ever just expect things (at least the majority of us!). The innovation you see today, and will continue to see in the coming years, from Millennials is remarkable and is so special. Are we impatient, yes; lazy and entitled, no.” Amber Bouchard, Recruiter

How does technology help you to collaborate?

Technology has improved collaboration a great amount. For my work, the most important collaborative technology is Google for Work; it gives me the ability to share, edit, and comment on documents and presentations, simultaneously with my co-workers. To be able to collaborate content in near real-time, we can provide detailed feedback quickly and save time. At Maven Wave, Google Docs and Google Slides are the tools I utilize the most to collaborate.”  Matt Powers, Analyst on Google Maps Team

What is the ideal culture for Millennials?

“As a Millennial, there are a few factors that constitute a Millennial-friendly culture. Mentorship and collaboration are essential components within the workplace that allow us to develop and expand our skills. The opportunity for leadership is another important factor for Millennials to grow within their careers. Promoting a transparent culture with openness across the organization along with flexibility creates a more enjoyable workplace for Millennials. Having the ‘fun factor’ and hosting company events/outings gives us the chance to develop positive relationships and friendships with our colleagues.”  Klaudia Gatowska, Marketing Coordinator

What value do you think Millennials bring to the enterprise?

“I think it would be fair to say Google services. Google gives us the ability to have Hangout meetings, screen shares, Gmail attachments, and threads. The features on Google Apps have become very important tools I use on a daily basis. At the same time, Google is also a cloud based system that allows for accessibility. I’m able to work from home or the train through my phone or laptop. I always rely on Google services at work.” Samu Thomas, IT Desktop Support
