Maven Monday: Maya Murali

Maven Wave is made up of a variety of individuals with unique talents. Every Monday, we highlight an employee from the company in a short video to show the world what makes each maven the expert or connoisseur they are.

Each month, we will delve a little deeper into the life of one Maven. This month our featured Maven is Maya Murali, a Visual Designer on our Experience Design team. Maya tells us a little bit about why she’s excited to do the work she does, what her design process looks like, and how her personality takes shape along with it.

Maven Monday
What do you look forward to most about your day-to-day work?

Blue sky design! It’s always a treat to work on a new product, site, or brand from the ground up. My day-to-day can consist of many meetings and one-off deliverables, so I relish the moments where I can focus my effort on design systems and illustration.

Describe one quality you think is important to have in your role.

Flexibility. It’s important to be able to communicate your ideas to others, take criticism, and collaborate. Good design is never created in a vacuum, and it evolves over time.

What is one thing you wish people knew about your job? What’s a common misconception about the work you do?

Misconception: visual design is solely aesthetic. To design is to continuously engage with psychology, sociology, and art. Communication is the primary goal – whether it be content, a theme, an emotion… aesthetics are only part of the package. Designers are always researching and exploring new ways to connect with users, a vital component in product development.

What activities or hobbies do you enjoy doing when you leave the office?

My typical evening is spent reading comics & fiction. I also enjoy boxing, cooking, drawing, and photography.

Why do you think a Maven stands out in a crowd?

I believe all Mavens share a thirst for knowledge. We’re uniquely talented in our respective fields and share a genuine interest in meeting new people, sharing ideas, and learning from others.

When faced with a new project or challenge, what do you do first?

My first step in any new project is always research. Research the company, the product, the audience, the context… and then begin design exploration!
