Abbvie’s PCS (preclinical studies) division tests chemical compounds for several years before determining that a potential pharmaceutical is ready to go to clinical trials. Abbvie budgets tens of millions of dollars per study and runs upwards of 60 concurrent workstreams. The group maximizes quality and throughput, by segmenting specialized execution into six departments. All six PCS departments were using different tools and methods to plan, manage, track and report KPIs for studies. Processes were mostly manual and duplication of forecasting, planning, and coordination existed across departments. Senior management required a strategic solution to maximize communication, efficiency, and operational analytics.
Maven Wave aligned a consulting team to perform a current state assessment, gap analysis, and provide a recommendation. During the gap analysis and recommendation phase, Maven Wave evaluated existing solutions in the marketplace and compared them to custom application development capabilities within two different technology stacks.
Maven Wave and Abbvie concluded that the market did not have an existing software solution and that a custom solution would yield a strong value return on investment. Therefore, Maven Wave aligned a managed consulting/development team to drive a custom integrated solution between two Abbvie/Microsoft supported technologies Sharepoint & Project Server. The solution leveraged SharePoint’s workflow, presentation, and analytics capability while also providing dynamic integration with Project Server for structuring workstreams and projecting budgets.
Abbvie’s strategic operational scheduling solution is one of the first of its kind. The solution has standardized workflow assignment, operational reporting, budget/resource planning, and operational visibility for multi-year biopharmaceutical research initiatives. As a result, senior management has been able to proactively view workstream peaks and respond by staffing or outsourcing work to Clinical Research Organizations. Additionally the solution has optimized employees’ time spent on planning, status reporting, data entry, and duplication of effort. The resulting time savings has been accredited for an overall 10% improvement with respect to resource utilization and a 20% increase operational throughput. Ultimately, the solution enables Abbvie to complete more pre-clinical research studies per year, which has generated a favorable return on investment.
